The range of types of museums around the capital is unexpectedly large. There are child-friendly museums featuring trains, tanks and ethnic costumes, and downright quirky ones, like the tap-water museum, and the Museum of Zhou Capital and Royal Six Horse Chariot, featuring the partly unearthed remains of six horses buries along with their two-wheeled chariot.

The guidebook picks out the best places to see contemporary art, including the blunt warning that the National Art Museum of China "has a long way to go" and is "highly disappointing." The authors prefer the Songzhuang Artists Village, calling a day trip there "great fun and highly recommended," words that also aptly describe their guidebook.

Unlike a city like Rome, a visitor has to dig to uncover Beijing's rich history. This guidebook is an excellent way go deep.
