International Labor Day, which traditionally celebrated the efforts of farmers, workers and the socialist movement of the 1930s, is of particular significance in communist countries. Farmers and workers flock to the city to mark the beginning of a ‘golden week’ holiday created by the government to promote domestic tourism. Hundreds of thousands of residents and visitors crowd into Tiananmen Square at dawn to watch the flag raising ceremony or visit other cultural attractions. With more than 100 million people traveling throughout China from 1-7 May, transport can become hectic.
