There are quite a few vegetarian restaurants in Beijing. If we say that the Baihe specializes in Chinese studies, the next one we are going to introduce-- Gong De Lin, is famous for its Buddhist cuisine. It has a longer history than Baihe. Gong De Lin manages to satisfy the appetites of the faithful, while at the same time attending to their spiritual needs.

Many temples are scattered around Beijing. Buddhism has a long history and a large following here. Gong De Lin is a favourite for members of the Buddhist faith, who are keen to enjoy some Epicurean delights.

The first Gong De Lin opened in Shanghai during the 1920s at the suggestion of a monk from the Changji temple in Hangzhou. The restaurant opened its Beijing establishment 60 years later.

Buddhists are essentially vegetarian. But they avoid some foods like garlic and onion which they consider too stimulating. There is no mistaking the type of cuisine, as main dishes are presented. They are named for Buddhist sayings and iconic images --- lotus, arhat and the goddess of mercy. Then what do Buddhists think of these dishes?

Customer, said,"It's Ok. But I prefer more natural."

Although this monk stresses that the food in his temple is more simple and natural than the dishes here -- he and his fellow monks seem unwilling to put down their chopsticks. Gong De Lin prides itself in creating delicious meals free of meat or fish. But you have to give credit to their exceptional, imitation meat dishes. Gong De Lin's foods address vegetarian appetites and provide a guilt-free solution to occasional cravings for meat.

The concept of vegetarianism is spreading fast. It's a way of life that promotes good health and maintains stable weight in a society that is highly conscious of such things. For members of the faith, and for others who prefer to hold to vegetarian diets there are lots of places to choose from in Beijing and enjoy a moment of peace.
